Yep, the answer to this problem is the dying battery. Mine was going out and I had it replaced, but the shop used the memory saver to ensure my settings would not be deleted. Of course I'm sure you know that is illegal, but this is what I installed in my 2010 F250 to do that very thing. It not only lets you watch movies while in drive, but it unlocks the nav to use while in motion too. And perhaps most important is that it allows the user to "one button" press the system back to factory.
